Ongoing debates and international coordination. With several major laws just passed, this week was relatively quieter for new legislation. In the United Kingdom, attention turned to how its new Data Protection and Digital Information Act (passed in late June) would treat AI – the UK ultimately rejected adding strict AI rules into this data law, opting to address AI governance in separate initiatives. This sparked debate in Britain over whether the UK is moving too slowly on AI-specific regulation. Internationally, officials prepared for upcoming global dialogues: for instance, planning was underway for the U.N. Security Council’s July meeting on AI, and G7 countries were reportedly considering a code of conduct for advanced AI developers. These discussions hint at growing momentum for international AI governance – recognizing that AI’s challenges cross borders and need cooperative solutions.
