Edge AI and on-device breakthroughs. This week, tech enthusiasts noted a subtle but significant launch by Google: an experimental app that allows users to run advanced AI models directly on their smartphones – no internet needed. Leaked on May 31 and discussed into early June, the app (codenamed “Project EdgeAI”) lets people download smaller versions of AI models (for example, for image editing or language translation) and process data locally on their device. This shift to on-device AI is a game-changer for privacy and accessibility: it means AI features can work even offline or in areas with poor connectivity, and sensitive data (like photos or voice recordings) need not be sent to cloud servers. The move reflects a broader trend of optimizing AI to run on the “edge” – from phones to IoT gadgets – opening the door to a wave of innovation where AI is embedded everywhere in daily life. Also this week, at Apple’s annual WWDC event (June 5), while Apple didn’t unveil a new AI assistant, it quietly added AI-driven features in iOS, like smarter autocorrect and image search, indicating big companies are weaving AI into their product ecosystems in incremental but impactful ways.
